Understanding New Language Requirements

Recent changes in the English proficiency requirements for visa applications are important for anyone considering migration. Being informed about these changes will help you prepare your application and increase your likelihood of success.

Change Overview:

The Migration Legislative Instrument Number LIN 25/014 – Evidence of Functional English Language Proficiency was issued on 06 August 2025 by Matt Thistlethwaite, Assistant Minister for Immigration. The instrument is said to be effective from 7th August 2025.

Three new tests are approved from this instrument, as follows:

CELPIP General (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)
LANGUAGECERT Academic
Michigan English Test (MET)

Which test scores has changed?

All other test scores remain the same except below test types with revision on almost all modules.

PTE Academic
C1 Advanced
OET
TOEFL iBT

Test Result Effectiveness

Tests taken before 7th August 2025 will still be considered under previous legislative procedure.

For example: If you sat for the PTE Academic test on 5th August and received it’s result on 8th August as equivalent to 65 each on all modules, then you will be considered to have a Proficient English level until the test expires in 3 years time for prescribed General Migration purpose.

Anyone sitting on their test after 7th August will be considered on new policy.
