Eligibility Criteria for Citizenship by Conferral


For most aspiring Australians, the route to citizenship lies through conferral. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Be a Permanent Resident: Hold a valid permanent Australian visa.
  • Reside in Australia: Meet the residence requirements. Generally, this involves residing in Australia for four years with absences not exceeding 12 months in total and no more than 90 days in the year before applying.
  • Pass the Australian Citizenship Test: Demonstrate a good understanding of Australian values, history, and institutions (unless exempt due to age).
  • Be of Good Character: Possess a clean criminal record and meet character requirements. 
  • Intend to Reside in Australia: Show commitment to living in Australia or maintaining a strong connection.
  • Meet Basic English Language Requirements: Have sufficient English proficiency to participate in Australian life.
